kɒmprəˈmat
Kompromat refers to compromising or incriminating material collected on a person or group to be used for blackmail, extortion, or political sabotage. It is most commonly used in reference to intelligence agencies and politics.
Kompromat typically takes one of two approaches:
The Secret Threat: The information is quietly kept and its existence is revealed to the target. This ensures the target's loyalty, compliance, or hidden cooperation.
The Public Smear: The material is actively leaked to the media or public to destroy a rival’s reputation and discredit their career.
